Make it stop

Has this ever happened to you? You think about buying something, say, a widget. Suddenly, all your ads have pictures of widgets of all descriptions, colours, and sizes. The unrelenting barrage of ads works, and you buy a widget or perhaps a six-pack of them if you shop at Costco or Sam’s Club.

But the ads continue. They know so much, but they don’t seem to know that they won and you bought the friggin’ widget. I have a Huawei laptop, so my thoughts are instantly transmitted to China and back to Meta in the blink of an eye. Widget factories are humming all over the world. How do you make it stop? It started after you actually typed in a search request; now all I have to do is think about it, and the ads start.

We’ve been looking for a replacement inflatable dinghy. Now I see them everywhere. We have YouTube TV, and inflatables are showing up in the ads there as well. The only way I’ve found to make the specific ads stop is to start talking about something else. Search and talk about ‘thing-a-ma-bobs’ and inflatable boats change to thing-a-ma-bobs.
