On this day in 1941 over 2400 were killed and almost 1200 were injured during the attack on Pearl Harbor. 350 planes from six Japanese carriers attacked at 08:00. Almost 1200 of the dead were from the Battleship Arizona. The Arizona exploded and sank when she received a direct hit to the forward magazine. The Arizona and one other ship were never salvaged or removed. The Arizona is now the memorial to those lost in the attack. Other battleships sunk that day; Oklahoma, West Virginia and California. The Nevada, Pennsylvania, Tennessee and Maryland were also damaged during the attack. The Pennsylvania remained in service. The other damaged ships with the exception of the Oklahoma returned to service before the end of the war.
