CXXVII – 4 sleeps till Christmas

Punta Gorda Rim Canal Light Parade;

Roy and Margaret Eaton and John and Marilyn Lucy were very kind to think of the crew of FRACAS and include us in their dinner plans. It also just happened to be the Rim Canal Christmas Boat Light Parade. It was a neighborhood pot luck of sorts with the entree being on your group and salads and sides were pot luck. Lots of neighbors shared in and the corner of the canal was a busy place. There were 49 +/- entries in the parade and it was very cool.

Some of the pictures are not great I struggle with all the things necessary in taking good pictures especially at night:

Winter Solstice

Have you prepared for the shortest daylight of the year and the longest night. You know the definition of a quickie? This won’t hurt did it. (Sorry) Time for a few Cliff Clavin facts about Winter Solstice;

  • The solstice is caused by the earth’s tilt. We are crooked. The earth is tilted relative to our orbit around the sun
  • While we have the shortest day in the north, in the south they have the longest day. The roles are reversed in the Spring when it happens again.
  • This same tilt causes the North Pole’s full day of dark and the south pole’s full day of light.

Day and night sides of Earth at the instant of the December 2014 solstice (2014 December 21 at 23:03 Universal Time). Note that the north polar region of Earth must endure 24 hours of night, while the south polar region gets to bask in 24 hours of daylight. Image credit: Earth and Moon Viewer

You may ask what does this have to do with anything? I give you this information so that you can make plans for the extended period of dark.

For example I will wear my headlamp all day to be prepared.

More later…
